Baseball Preview: Wheeling & West Liberty

Bobcat baseball will open the long awaited 2021 campaign on the road.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team is set to open the 2021 season on Saturday (March 27) at Wheeling in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. before heading to West Liberty for another twin bill.

• Wesleyan baseball last competed on March 7, 2020 in Winter Haven, Florida against Saint Anselm.
• Mitchell Courtney returns to the mound after making three starts during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. He recorded a 3.94 earned run average and struck out 14 batters over 16.0 innings of work. 
• Nick Grotti was the leading hitter for the Bobcats in 2020 going 16-for-47 (.340) at the dish with one homer and nine RBI. 
• Starting 10 games last season, Bryson Fluke was 17-for-34 at the plate with three RBI and a triple.
• Eric Forbrick returns for his fifth season with WVWC baseball.
• Randy Tenney enters his 35th season as the head coach of the Wesleyan baseball program. He has accumulated a 779-596-6 overall record. Greg Stagani returns for his second season as the Bobcat pitching coach and Hunter Thomas will serve as an assistant coach. 
 
Scouting Wheeling
Wheeling is off to a 7-4 start after sweeping Concord in a doubleheader on Monday, March 22. 
 
Nick Luciano and Albert Baez have both yet to allow a run and struck nine in their first starts on the mound this season for the Cardinals.
 
Cameron Riley is off to a 19-for-44start at the plate and already has three home runs with 14 RBI.
 
Ryan Lewiciki enters his third season as the Wheeling head baseball coach.
 
Scouting West Liberty
The West Liberty baseball team currently owns a 5-6 record after sweeping Concord in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 23. 
 
Ian Brady has only allowed two earned runs in 16.0 innings on the hill and has compiled a team-high 16 strikeouts.
 
Ty Helmke is 9-for-23 at the dish with six RBI to pace the Hilltopper offense so far. 
 
Eric Burkle is in his 14th season as the West Liberty head coach. WVWC pitching coach Greg Stagani pitched for Burkle at WLU.
