O'Shields Spins No-Hitter, Bobcats Split Doubleheader

Abigail O’Shields threw a five-inning no-hitter with five punchouts in game one.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team (1-3) split a doubleheader against Glenville State (4-15) on Saturday (March 27) at Culpepper Field.

Game One (WVWC 9, GSC 0)
After Glenville State went down in order to start the game, the Bobcat offense ignited. Brooke Clark led off the home half of the first with a double. Grace Smith singled and advanced Clark to third. After Smith stole second, Kennedy Cowart laced a two RBI double to put WVWC ahead 2-0. Cowart scored on an RBI groundout by Destiny Alvarado. The Bobcats led 3-0 after one inning.

The Bobcat offense continued to pour it on in the second inning. Lauryn King's two-RBI double put the Bobcats ahead 5-0. A Molly Osborne triple scored Bella Posey in the third inning to increase the WVWC lead to 7-0. Posey drove in a run herself in the bottom of the fourth to increase the Bobcat lead to nine.

Nine runs would be plenty of support for Abigail O'Shields. O'Shields was crafty in the circle for the Bobcats. The sophomore shut down the Pioneer bats and pitched five no-hit innings. The southpaw recorded five K's and surrendered only two walks. O'Shields and the Bobcats cruised to a 9-0 victory in game one.

Game Two (GSC 7, WVWC 5)
The Pioneers opened the game scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. The Bobcats responded and tied the game in the bottom half of the third thanks to an RBI single from King and a three-run double from Posey.

Glenville State regained the lead and scored three runs in the top half of the fourth inning. The Bobcats cut the deficit to two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the home team dropped game two of the doubleheader by a score of 7-5.

King finished game two with three hits including a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Lauren Niglio picked up two hits in the second contest. Ciana Bowen threw three scoreless innings in her relief appearance and struck out two Glenville State batters.
