WVWC Posts Shutout, Wins on Walk-Off

Wesleyan softball swept Notre Dame (Ohio) in a home doubleheader.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (3-3) softball team posted a shutout and won in walk-off fashion for a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame (Ohio) (6-8) on Saturday (April 3) at Culpepper Field.

Game One (WVWC 11, NDC 0)
A double down the third baseline by Kennedy Cowart put WVWC on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. In her very first at-bat of the season, Kiley Turner punched a single up the middle to score Cowart for a 2-0 lead after one inning.

A trio of RBI singles in the bottom of the second by Brooke Clark, Cowart and Lauryn King handed Wesleyan a 5-0 advantage.

The Bobcats used some 2-out magic in the bottom of the third. Molly Osbornce placed a double in the right centerfield gap to score Lauren Niglo. A couple of batters later, Grace Smith fought off a single to right field as Osborne crossed home plate. Another run scored on an error for an 8-0 Bobcat lead after three innings.

Osborne legged out an RBI infield single in the bottom of the fourth. That was followed by a 2-run triple to right by Clark.

Leading 11-0, Bobcat pitcher Hannah Hudson helped WVWC finish the game in five innings. Hudson (1-0) only allowed three hits and struck out six batters over five innings.

Game Two (WVWC 7, NDC 6)
Notre Dame (Ohio) got off to a strong start in game two, thanks to a 2-run single by McKenzie Zigmont in the top of the first inning. Wesleyan answered in the bottom half on an RBI single into right field off of the bat of Turner.

Bella Posey evened the score (2-2) by lacing a single into left in the bottom of the third. NDC responded in the top of the fourth with another 2-run single, this time by Danielle Rivera.

King cranked a solo homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats loaded the bases and forced extra innings after an RBI groundout from Clark.

The Falcons plated a run in the top of the eighth for a 5-4 lead, but the score knotted again in the bottom half of the frame after an NDC wild pitch.

Notre Dame (Ohio) jumped ahead again in the top of the ninth on a single to center by Meadow Odum. In the bottom of the ninth, Clark pushed Niglio across on a double to right field.

All tied 6-6, Smith delivered a walk-off single up the middle as Clark scored the winning run in extra innings.

Abigail O'Shields struck out a career-high 11 batters over 7.1 innings of work. Hudson (2-0) picked up the win in relief.
