Concord Jumps Out Early in Series

Wesleyan baseball fell behind early and Concord held on in both games of a home twin bill.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Concord (6-16) jumped out to early leads in both games against the West Virginia Wesleyan (3-13) baseball team at Hank Ellis Field on Saturday, April 17.

Game One (Concord 13, WVWC 3)
Concord scored 10 runs in the first inning highlighted by a pair of 2-run homers from Anthony Stehlin.

The Bobcats pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by Cade Leach and Hunter Eplin. Geovani Sostre drove home another WVWC run on a base hit to left field in the bottom of sixth.

Kyle Riggleman tossed three scoreless innings in relief with a strikeout. Alec Tamburri also picked up a strikeout in his 2021 debut.

Game Two (Concord 5, WVWC 3)
The Mountain Lions loaded the bases in the top of the first and a run came across when Richard Ortiz was hit by a pitch. Another run scored on an acrobatic double play turned by Blake McMullen. Michael DuPont singled to left center for a 3-0 advantage.

Wesleyan answered immediately in the bottom of the first inning. Eric Forbrick crossed home plate when Sostre placed a single into left field. A Bryson Fluke fielder's choice drove in Nick Grotti as the home team cut the deficit to 3-2 after one.

Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Grotti brough McMullen around on a single to center field. Grotti finished 3-for-4 at the plate.

After the first inning, Jake Hakey (0-1) settled in on the mound for Wesleyan. Freshman Broderick Rohrbaugh threw two hitless innings in relief.

Adrian Delgado came to the plate representing the potential winning run with two runners on in the bottom of the seventh before flying out.
