CHARLESTON, W.Va.- The West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team brought their A-game Saturday (April 24) against West Liberty when they took down the Hilltoppers 6-1. In a non-conference matchup earlier in the season, the men lost 7-0 to West Liberty.
WVWC needed to set the tone earlier in doubles if they wanted a shot at redemption against the Hilltoppers. That tone was set when
Carlos Dodero Fernandez and Haruki Iizuka defeated their pairing at No. 3 6-0.
The 'Cats would fall at No. 2, but
Taylor Papworth and
Harry Simaioforidis would pick up their teammates and clinch the doubles point for Wesleyan, winning 6-1.
With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, the Bobcats wouldn't look back.
Dodero Fernandez played a phenomenal match at No. 1 winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).
Iizuka did not drop a single game at No. 6 winning (6-0, 6-0).
With the 'Cats now leading 3-0,
Camillo Salvi would clinch the match with a victory at No. 4. Salvi defeated his opponent (6-3, 6-3) in straight sets to give WVWC the match.
Papworth and
Anthony McIntosh would win their matchups at No. 2 and No. 5 to round out the scoring for WVWC. Papworth won (6-4, 7-5), and McIntosh won (6-2, 6-4).
Next up for WVWC is the Mountain East Conference Championships on May 1-2. The championships will be held at the Charleston Tennis club.
