Wesleyan Drops Doubleheader Despite Grotti's Solid Day at the Plate

Nick Grotti homered for the first time of the season and drove in three runs during Sunday's (April 25) doubleheader.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (3-17) baseball team was defeated by West Virginia State (21-7) in both games of a doubleheader at Calvin L. Bailey Field on Sunday, April 25.

Game One (WVSU 5, WVWC 2)
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Matthew Cline hit a 2-run homer to left center followed by a solo shot from Andrew Massey. A 2-run double into the gap by Trey Junkins put the Yellow Jackets ahead 5-0 after five innings.

In the top of the sixth, Nick Grotti singled through the left side of the infield to bring in Tanner McCallister and Bryson Fluke.

Game Two (WVSU 15, WVWC 3)
A 2-run triple by Andrew Stone helped West Virginia State strike first in game two. The Yellow Jackets led 3-0 at the end of the first inning.

Trailing 7-0, Wesleyan got on the board in the top of the fifth after Grotti doubled and Adrian Delgado brought him around on a single.

West Virginia State scored eight runs on six hits and two WVWC errors in the bottom of the fifth.

Fluke picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center in the top of the sixth. Grotti went the opposite way to right for his first home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning. Grotti finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.
