FROSTBURG, Md. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (16-10) softball team routed Frostburg State (21-12) in game one before utilizing a late scoring spurt for a doubleheader sweep at Bobcat Field on Tuesday (April 27).Â

Game One (WVWC 10, Frostburg State 2)
Wesleyan got off to a fast start in the first game.
Kennedy Cowart shot a single down the left field line to score
Brooke Clark. The next batter,
Lauryn King lined a double to the left field wall as
Grace Smith crossed home plate.
Kiley Turner slammed a 2-run double to straightaway center for a 4-0 advantage as the five WVWC batters reached base.Â

The visitors were not done yet in the top of the first.
Grace Hightower and Clark both reached on errors as two runs scored. Smith ripped a 2-run double down the left field line and later scored when Cowart reached on an error.Â

WVWC scored nine runs on five hits and four Frostburg State errors in the top of the first inning.Â

Turner led off the second inning with a solo homer over the fence in centerfield. The blast was her fourth home run of the season and Wesleyan led 10-0.Â

Abigail O'Shields (9-4) struck out three batters in the shortened 5-inning contest.Â

Game Two (WVWC 4, Frostburg State 3)
O'Shields (10-4) also earned the start in the circle for game two. With runners at second and third in the bottom of the fourth inning, O'Shields picked up a big swinging strikeout to get out of the jam.Â

Frostburg State broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fifth with a 2-out RBI double by Taylor McCarty.Â

Wesleyan immediately responded in the top of the sixth when
Molly Osborne doubled to score
Grace Hightower all the way from first to tie it up, 1-1.Â

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the seventh,
Kelley Bourne singled home King to even the score. Up next,
Bella Posey dragged a single through the left side of the infield as Turner scored the go-ahead run. Hightower legged out a double to score Bourne for a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.Â
Frostburg State scored again and brought the game's winning run to the plate behind 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. O'Shields got McCarty to pop out to Cowart on the right side of the infield to seal the doubleheader sweep.Â
