Box Score FAIRMONT, W.Va.-- The West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team upset the Fairmont State Falcons for its first victory of the 2021 season. The Falcons are ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic Region.
WVWC attacked Fairmont right from the start, winning all three doubles matches. At Doubles No.1, Harry Simaiofordis and
Taylor Papworth controlled the match from the start taking care of the Fairmont duo 6-2.
At doubles No.2, Nadal Ferrer and
Camillo Salvi provided much of the same energy, clinching the Bobcats' doubles point with their 6-2 victory. In the final pairing, senior
Carlos Dodero Fernandez made his season debut with Haruki Iizuka at doubles No.3. In the closest match of the three, WVWC prevailed, winning 6-4.
"Today showed how critical the doubles point is," head coach
Jay Evans said. "We came out firing in doubles and were able to carry that momentum into three singles wins."
The victory is the first in Evans' short time at the helm of the Wesleyan tennis program.
In singles, the 'Cats did indeed carry over the doubles success winning the top three matches. At singles, No. 1 Dodero Fernandez dominated from start to finish, winning (6-0 and 6-2).
Simaiforidis showed his veteran poise at No. 2, going (6-4, 6-4) to give the Bobcats the 3-0 lead.
Taylor Papworth sealed the victory for WVWC by giving his team another dominant performance winning in straight sets (6-3 and 6-2).
Next up for the Bobcats is another tough contest in the No. 1 team in the Atlantic Region, the Golden Eagles from Charleston. The home match is scheduled to take place on Friday (April 9) at 4 p.m.
