Wesleyan Bats Spur Doubleheader Sweep

The Bobcats dominated game one and pulled away in game two to secure a road doubleheader sweep for their sixth consecutive win.

ELKINS, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (7-3) softball team's offense excelled and the Bobcats took advantage of Davis & Elkins (7-7) errors in a road doubleheader sweep on Wednesday, April 7. The Bobcats have won six games in a row.

Game One (WVWC 14, D&E 4)
Kiley Turner sent a 3-run homer over the fence in left field to hand the visitors an early 3-0 lead.

Wesleyan tacked on two more runs in the top of the second highlighted by a Lauryn King RBI single through the left side of the infield. She picked up another RBI single in the top of the fourth and that was followed by Turner run-scoring single to right center.

Bella Posey placed a single into left field as two more Bobcat runs crossed the plate in the fourth for a 9-0 advantage. Kelley Bourne capped off a six-run fourth frame by hitting a two-run homer to left center.

In the top of the fifth, Paije Bragg doubled home Shelby Kennedy. Taylor Swartz joined the RBI party with a single to right field that scored Lauren Niglio as Wesleyan cruised to a 14-4 victory in five innings.

Hannah Hudson (4-0) struck out eight batters over her five innings in the circle. Turner was 2-for-4 with four RBI and King finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Game Two (WVWC 7, D&E 1)
A fielding error by D&E allowed the first run of the game to cross the plate in the top of the first inning before the Senators evened the score, 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Grace Smith singled home Brooke Clark in the top of the fifth to help WVWC regain the lead, 2-1.

The Bobcats broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning. Posey brought King home on a bunt single. Up next, Bourne doubled in Posey before coming around to score on a single by Molly Osborne.

Clark wrapped her 4-for-4 outing at the plate with a 2-run jack over the left field fence. All of a sudden, Wesleyan led 7-1.

Abigail O'Shields got the start in game two for WVWC and pitched four innings in the circle. Hudson (5-0) came on in relief to pick up the win.
