Bobcats Fall 4-3 in Tough Contest Against Charleston

WVWC fell to the top ranked team in the Atlantic region on Friday (April 9).

Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team lost a close battle to the Atlantic region's top team Charleston, 4-3 on Friday (April 9).

WVWC jumped on the Golden Eagles early, taking the doubles point from UC.

At No. 3, Carlos Dodero Fernandez and Nadal Ferrer's pairing were in complete control of the entire match. The duo won 6-3 to give WVWC the early advantage.

After dropping the match at No. 2, it was up to Harry Simaioforidis and Taylor Papworth to prevail in what was an intense contest throughout. Simaioforidis and Papworth won the match 6-4 to put the Bobcats up 1-0 going into singles play.

Charleston rebounded and proceeded to win the following three points. UC won at singles No. 3, 5 and 6 to give them the 3-1 edge.

At No.1, Carlos Dodero Fernandez saw his toughest matchup of the season in Northern Colorado transfer John Giesberts. Fernandez led 4-3 early in the first set but could not overcome a powerful surge from Giesberts, who went on to win the match in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) and clinch the match for Charleston.

The intense matches were not finished there. The No.4 match between Taylor Papworth and Jake Magill was neck and neck the entire way. The first set needed five tiebreak points to determine the winner. Papworth, who has shown a veteran edge all season, eventually won the set and his match (7-6, 6-4).

The final match of the day will probably be regarded as one of the best this season. At No. 2, familiar foes Harry Simaioforidis and Marshall Dagostine gave fans a special contest.

After Simaioforidis took the first set 6-4, Dagostine bounced back, winning the second set 6-4. The final set showed much of the same excitement going back and forth the entire way. The veteran Simaioforidis let his talent shine through in the last two games taking home the victory by winning the third set, 6-4.

Wesleyan men's tennis plays host to Davis & Elkins on Monday, April 12 at 4 p.m.
