Women's Tennis Preview: West Virginia State & Fairmont State

WVWC women’s tennis takes to the road for pair of MEC weekend matches.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan women's tennis program (0-2, 0-0 MEC) returns to competition this weekend after a three-week hiatus, heading to West Virginia State and Fairmont State for two matches this weekend. The Bobcats head to Institute to take on the Yellow Jackets on Saturday at 12 p.m., and head to Fairmont on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match with the Falcons.
 
Quick Hits
  • The Bobcats will play in back-to-back matches for the second time this season, after playing Salem and West Liberty on March 16th and 17th.
  • WVWC will look to pick up their first win of the season, traveling to two regionally ranked opponents for this weekend's matches.
  • Hannah Spruce will make her season debut for the Bobcats, rejoining the team following the conclusion of volleyball season.

Scouting West Virginia State
  • The Yellow Jackets were picked second in the MEC preseason poll, welcoming WVWC into Saturday's match with a 4-3 record, and are currently ranked fourth in the ITA Atlantic Region.
  • WVSU is undefeated in MEC play thus far, with wins over Fairmont State, Frostburg State, and Davis & Elkins.
  • Freshman Abigail Wild is off to an excellent start to her career, playing #1 singles for WVSU and ranked 23rd in the ITA Division II Women's Singles rankings.
  • Veteran head coach John Simms is in his 18th season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets' program, and his WVSU program has qualified for twelve consecutive NCAA tournaments during his tenure in addition to nine conference championships between their time in the WVIAC and MEC.
Scouting Fairmont State
  • Fairmont State enters Sunday's match with a 3-7 record as they look to snap a five match losing streak.
  • The Falcons are currently ranked ninth in the ITA Atlantic Regional rankings, and aim to defeat the Bobcats for the first time since 2012.
  • Fairmont State was picked fourth in the MEC preseason poll, and are led by alumnus Kayla Kurczak, who is in her eighth season leading her alma mater's tennis program.
