Bobcats Advance with Win Over Fairmont State

WVWC defeated Fairmont State 4-1 in the semifinal round of the MEC Tournament.

CHARLESTON, W.Va.-- The West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team advanced to the final of the Mountain East Conference tournament with a 4-1 win over Fairmont State on Saturday (May 1). Outstanding singles play helped separate the Bobcats from their opponent.

WVWC dropped the doubles point when Fairmont State won at both No. 1 & 2. However, Carlos Dodero Fernandez and Haruki Iizuka gave the 'Cats some momentum heading into singles play with a 6-0 victory at No. 3.

Singles action was a completely different story for the Bobcats.

Taylor Papworth got things started for WVWC. Fresh off First Team All-Conference recognition from the conference. Papworth made quick work of his opponent at No. 4 winning (6-2, 6-3).

Fellow First Team All-Conference performer Dodero Fernandez turned the tides in the match for good. The Madrid, Spain native defeated Gui Pachane (6-2, 6-3) giving the Bobcats the lead.

Nadal Ferrer continued the winning ways with a convincing win at No. 6. Ferrer, who last played April 9th because of injury defeated Austin Noel (6-2, 6-4) putting the 'Cats on the brink of victory.

Camillo Salvi clinched the match for WVWC winning (6-0, 7-6 (6)).

"After losing a tough fight in doubles, I was very pleased with the way we came out in singles play." Head Coach Jay Evans said.

"Tomorrow we will face our toughest task yet to bring home a championship, which would be a testament to our athletes given all of the adversity we've faced this season."

WVWC awaits Charleston in the final of MEC tournament on Sunday (May 2) at the Charleston Tennis Club. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
