MEC Softball Tournament Preview: Day One

WVWC softball will battle West Liberty in its first matchup on Friday (May 7) at 2:30 p.m. in Salem, Va.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team is set for the 2021 Mountain East Conference Tournament hosted at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem, Va. May 7-9. WVWC is the South No. 4 seed and will face West Liberty in its opening matchup at 2:30 p.m. on Friday (May 7). 
 
Quick Hits
• Lauryn King (Outfield), Kennedy Cowart (First Base), Grace Smith (Second Base), Kiley Turner (Utility) and Abigail O'Shields (Pitcher) were all selected to the All-MEC First Team. 
• O'Shields was named MEC Co-Pitcher of the week (May 3) after going 5-0 with five complete performances. 
• King hit a 3-run homer and grand slam en route to a nine RBI performance against Davis & Elkins on Tuesday (April 26) in game two. 9 RBI is currently the best for a single game in NCAA Division-II this season and tied for the single game high across all NCAA levels in 2021.
• Turner hit a pair of home runs in Friday's (April 23) doubleheader against No. 25 Charleston including the go-ahead solo shot to left in game two. 
• O'Shields spun a no-hitter in a five-inning, 9-0 victory over Glenville State on Saturday (March 27).
• Steve Warner enters his 29th season as the head coach of the Wesleyan softball program. He has accumulated an astonishing 1094-408-1 overall record during that span. 
 
Scouting West Liberty
West Liberty carries a 30-14 overall record and 19-7 MEC mark into the MEC Tournament. 
 
Kat Donzella was named MEC Player of the Year, Mackenzie Amend was picked as the MEC Pitcher of the Year and Herb Minch was voted as the MEC Coach of the Year.
 
Donzella, a junior from Wheeling, W.Va., led the league with a .467 batting average this season. She ranked first in the league in hits (63), home runs (9) and total bases (107), second in runs (40) and fourth in RBI (30). 
 
Amend, a junior from Wheeling, W.Va., went 9-1 with a 1.41 ERA in the circle for the Hilltoppers this season. She had the lowest ERA in the conference allowing just 12 earned runs in 76.2 innings worked. Her 128 strikeouts rank third in the conference.
