SALEM, Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (20-12) softball team scored five runs in the last two innings to defeat Charleston (30-14) after falling to West Liberty (31-14) earlier in the opening day of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at the James I. Moyer Complex on Friday (May 7).
Game One (West Liberty 3, WVWC 0)
MEC Player of the Year Kat Donzella pulled a solo homer down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth before doubling in two more runs an inning later for a 3-0 advantage.
MEC Pitcher of the Year Makenzie Amend threw a no-hitter and struck out 11 batters.
Game Two (WVWC 5, Charleston 0)
It was scoreless until the top of the sixth when Wesleyan loaded the bases.
Kennedy Cowart drove in the first run of the game on a RBI groundout to the right side of the infield. The next batter,
Lauryn King grounded out and then the throw came home when
Brooke Clark broke home to score on an evasive slide.
Up 2-0 in the top of the seventh, the Bobcats added some insurance.
Molly Osborne ripped a single to right field as
Taylor Swartz scored from second base. A Clark groundout brought in
Grace Hightower before a
Grace Smith RBI single up the middle rounded out the scoring.
Abigail O'Shields (14-5) went the distance to record her second complete game shutout of the season.
