Women's Soccer Preview: Glenville State & Charleston

WVWC women's soccer opens the home slate versus Glenville State before a Sunday night showdown against Charleston.

The Basics

The West Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team welcomes Glenville State to Buckhannon for its home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. before playing Charleston at home on Sunday, Sept. 19 in another game under the lights. 

Quick Hits

  • In its opening week of action, WVWC women's soccer played Slippery Rock to a 2-2 draw on Sept. 2 and lost 2-0 to No. 14 Indiana (Pa.) on Sept. 5. 
  • On a free kick, senior defender Natalie Pireu knocked in the first goal of the season at Slippery Rock.
  • Sophomore forward Savannah Masterson scored her first goal as a Bobcat on Sept. 2 at Slippery Rock.
  • Wesleyan outshot Indiana (Pa.) 15-9 and 12-2 on goal in the defeat on Sept. 5. 
  • Pireu earned All-Mountain East Conference First Team, United Soccer Coaches All-Region and CoSIDA Academic All-District honors after her 2021 spring campaign.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Moore is coming off a spring debut season in which she was named to the MEC All-Freshmen team.
  • Senior defender Jadyn Tavekelian continued to be recognized by the MEC with Honorable Mention recognition last season. 
  • Senior defender Lauren Baumgartner took home CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. 
  • Former MEC Freshman of the Year at forward, MaKatlyn Tucker returns for her senior year.
  • Richard Owens enters his fourth season as the head coach and former All-PSAC honoree Christian Bukowski returns for his second season as assistant coach.

Scouting Glenville State

The Pioneers are 1-1-0 through their first two games of the season with a 3-0 win over Converse and a 1-0 loss at West Liberty on Friday (Sept. 10). In the 2021 spring campaign, Glenville State compiled a 1-7-0 record. 

Mackenzie Hendricks, Tori Cutright and Victoria Porterfield all scored goals in Glenville State's season-opening win against Converse on Sept. 6. Hendricks, Miki Abe and Merel Smets each have recorded an assist so far this season. 

J.R. Dodson enters his first season in charge of the Glenville State women's soccer program.

Scouting Charleston

The Golden Eagles enter the week 1-1-0 after losing in overtime to Kutztown 1-0 on Sept. 3 and defeating Shippensburg 1-0 on Sept. 5 in the D2 in the DMV showcase in Leesburg, Va. 

Senior forward Keira Hill scored the game winner against Shippensburg off an assist from sophomore forward Laura Vierhout. 

Charleston finished 5-2-2 during the 2021 spring season. Todd Diuguid enters his 21st season as the Golden Eagle head coach.
