Bobcats Push No. 7 Davis & Elkins to the Brink in OT

Nika Monaselidze scored the lone goal for the 'Cats in the 2-1 defeat at D&E.

ELKINS, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (4-3-0, 3-3-0) men's soccer team battled No. 7 Davis & Elkins Senators (7-0-0, 4-0-0) in a 2-1 overtime loss on Wednesday night (Sept. 29).

D&E was the first to strike in the 10th minute when a Senator attacker was taken down in the box. Alex Estrada-Avila stepped up to the penalty spot and slotted one past Logan Nelson to give D&E the 1-0 lead.

However, Wesleyan responded just seven minutes later. Nika Monaselidze continued his run of great form beating the Senator keeper to his right and equalizing the game at 1-1. Neither team could muster up anything else in the first half and WVWC went into the locker room outshooting its opponent 5-3.

D&E flipped the script in the second half. Nelson kept things level with three great saves that left the result up to a golden goal overtime period.

The Bobcats' only chance in overtime came in the 103rd minute when Tanner Amos found the ball on the left side of the penalty area. Amos tried to beat Senator keeper Jeremy Coste to his right side, but was denied the opportunity.

Only two minutes later, Daniel Cerezo put an end to the match after heading home a cross from David Jara.

WVWC will head to Greensburg, Pa., on Saturday (Oct. 2) to take on Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe Seton Hill in a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.
