Women's Soccer Preview: West Virginia State & West Liberty

The Bobcats host nationally-ranked West Virginia State on Wednesday (Oct. 19).

The Basics
West Virginia Wesleyan (4-9-1, 4-7-1) women's soccer is preparing for a pair of Mountain East Conference matches this week. Wesleyan will welcome nationally-ranked West Virginia State on Wednesday (Oct. 19) at 7:15 p.m. at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. The Bobcats will wrap up the week on Sunday (Oct. 23) at West Liberty at 1 p.m.

  • Last week, the Bobcats topped Glenville State, 2-0. Ava Badallo and Beth Burchett both scored within the first 30 minutes of the game. The 'Cats dropped a home game to Charleston on Sunday (Oct. 16).
  • Badallo, a freshman from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., leads WVWC in points (eight) and goals (four). 
  • Talia Stacy and Kameron Bonneau and Beth Burchett have each netted two goals.
  • Paloma Zamora, Chloe Ramirez, Maggie Queen and Ellie Pergolotti all have scored one goal.
  • Goalkeeper Ally Moore has started all 14 matches for WVWC and has made 72 saves, which is the seventh-highest save total in the Mountain East Conference. Moore and the Bobcats' defense have kept four clean sheets this season.
Scouting West Virginia State
The West Virginia State Yellow Jackets have had a historic season. WVSU earned its first-ever national ranking this season and have won 13 of 14 matches played. The lone match the Yellow Jackets did not win was a draw versus Concord on Sept. 25. WVSU enters this week ranked 18th nationally and have outscored opponents 44-11.
 
The high-powered Yellow Jackets offense is led by Fran Soares-Cupertino. The Brazilian striker has accumulated 41 points with 16 goals and nine assists. Soares-Cupertino's 16 goals leads all MEC scorers. Esther Dhiramo (eight) and Brooklyn Pritt (seven) are also in the top-10 of MEC goal scorers. Laura Galindo has been in goal for over 1,170 minutes this season. Galindo has made 48 saves and has turned in five shutouts this season.
 
Lisa Mann is currently in her fourth season leading WVSU women's soccer. Mann, a Newcastle, England native, played professionally in Mississippi and Louisiana in the Women's Soccer Premier League.
 
Scouting West Liberty
The Hilltoppers enter this week in fifth place in the MEC North standings. WLU has knocked off Alderson Broaddus twice and Charleston once in conference play.
 
Amelia Compston is the leading point-scorer for West Liberty. Compston has scored a pair of goals and has chipped in two assists this season. Zara Wickert has stopped 67 shots from entering the back of the net. Wickert has averaged a 72.8 save percentage in the 2022 season.
 
Returning for his ninth season at the helm of West Liberty women's soccer is Barry Christmas. Christmas launched the WLU soccer program during the 2010-11 school year.
 
Up Next
The final week of the regular season will feature a Wesleyan matchup versus Wheeling on Oct. 26 in Buckhannon. The Bobcats will conclude the regular season on Oct. 30 for a rivalry game at Davis & Elkins starting at 5 p.m.
