Mountain East Conference Track & Field Championships: Recap

WVWC track and field wrapped up three days at Glenville State with a third and sixth place finish at the MEC Championships

GLENVILLE, W.Va.-- The West Virginia Wesleyan track and field team wrapped up three days of competition at the Mountain East Conference Track and Field Championships at I.L & Sue Morris Stadium at Glenville State University. The women's team took home third place with 122.5 points, while the men's team scored 62 points and claimed sixth overall. 

 

On the women's side, Kennedy Kuhns blew away the field with a throw of 38.12m in the javelin to be crowned champion. The next closest competitor was 2.28m away from Kuhns' mark. Maggie Kovalcik was Second Team All-MEC in the long jump as she lept 5.25m to claim second in the event. 

 

Samantha Cash began her impressive three-day stretch with Second Team All-MEC recognition in the triple jump as she jumped 11.30m to place second in the event. Cash took home first place in the heptathlon accumulating 3844 points to claim both the indoor and outdoor titles. Cash continued to win the high jump after she cleared the bar at 1.65m and garnered First Team All-MEC recognition. 

 

Ny'Tierra Hobbs stole the show in the sprints, winning both the 100 and 200m dash. Hobbs ran 12.09 in the finals after running 11.78 in the prelims. Hobbs followed that strong performance with an NCAA provisional standard in the 200m dash prelims. Hobbs ran 24.26 in the prelims and 25.14 in the finals to take first in both events. Aubrey Wiethe took home Second Team All-MEC honors in the 400m hurdles, running 67.66. 

 

Leigha Hall was Honorable Mention All-MEC in the 3000m steeplechase as she took third place in the event running 12:17.31. 

 

Oliver French kicked off the field events on the men's side with a win in the javelin. French beat his nearest opponent by 3.4m as he landed a throw of 54.04m and garnered First Team All-MEC honors. 

 

Cade Robinson scored solid points for the 'Cats as he ran 4:02.40 in the 1500m to take home fifth place in the event. 

 

Tanner Faulkiner took home Second Team All-MEC in the 100m dash as he ran 10.93 to take second place. Faulkiner took third behind teammate Devin Taylor in the 200m dash as the duo ran 21.84 and 21.80, respectively. 

 

Hayden Hess took fourth in the 400m hurdles as he crossed the finish line in 57.23 to give the 'Cats needed points.
