West Virginia Wesleyan Women Turn in Standout Home Meet Performance

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — West Virginia Wesleyan women's track and field team came out on top in the annual Jasmine Clagett Memorial at Cebe Ross Field.

 

The women's team put together an impressive day, beginning with a one-two finish in the 100 meters as Darianne Christian won in a personal-best 12.53 and Destiney Barnette followed in second in a personal-best 12.84. Christian returned in the 200 meters to place second in 26.01, while Barnette added a fourth-place effort in 27.36. In the 400 meters, Reyna Headley ran a personal-best 1:01.38 for sixth.

 

Wesleyan's women were especially strong in the distance events. Lindsey Dillon won the 1500 meters in 4:46.24, with teammate Mariam Al-Zoubi right behind in second at 4:49.31 after also taking third in the 800 meters in 2:25.53. In the 3000-meter steeplechase, the Bobcats grabbed two of the top three spots, with Addie Elliot finishing second in 12:54.17 and Kristina Lesho taking third in 12:56.42.

 

The hurdles and relay events brought more highlights for the Bobcats. Marimo Akita placed third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.22, while Taryn Veltri followed in fourth at 1:09.14. Wesleyan then closed the track portion in style by winning the 4x400 relay as Reyna Headley, Darianne Christian, Marimo Akita, and Destiney Barnette combined for a time of 4:14.88.

 

In the women's field events, Wesleyan was dominant. Mallory McGinnis took third in the shot put with a personal-best 12.56 meters and then won the discus with a throw of 37.22 meters. Teammates Jacqualin Leaman and Mary Genes also scored strong marks in the shot put, placing seventh (10.78m) and eighth (10.50m), while Keleigh Chrisman added seventh in the discus with a personal-best 32.28 meters. In the hammer, Genes finished 11th with a personal-best 38.43 meters, Leaman was 12th at 37.74 meters, and Chrisman placed 15th with a personal-best 35.70 meters.

 

The Bobcats' jumpers and vaulters were just as effective. Jessica Williams tied for first in the high jump by clearing 1.55 meters, while Skylar Womack was fourth at a personal-best 1.45 meters and Ava Cash tied for eighth at 1.40 meters. Wesleyan then swept the top four places in the pole vault: Clover Stamat won at 2.85 meters, Ava Cash was second at 2.70 meters, Maylie Bland also cleared 2.70 meters for third, and Marimo Akita placed fourth at 2.55 meters. Williams added sixth at 1.95 meters. In the horizontal jumps, Destiney Barnette won the long jump with a personal-best 4.99 meters, and Shaelyn Capicola placed third in the triple jump with a personal-best 9.38 meters. Akita also finished fifth in the javelin at 23.58 meters.

 

The women's team finished first overall.
