Baseball Loses Final Games Of Series With Charleston, Gets Swept In Four-Game Set

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan Baseball team lost the final two games of their four-game set with the University of Charleston earlier today, getting swept by the Golden Eagles. UC recorded nine hits in both games and only allowed six total hits between the two games.

Game 1
Charleston jumped on the Bobcats early, hitting an RBI single and a bases clearing triple to take a 4-0 lead after just one inning. The Golden Eagles added to their lead with a 2-run shot in the bottom of the 3rd, extending their lead to six. WVWC recorded their first hits and run in the top of the 4th, kicking off the inning with a double by Jack Tilton and Thatcher Poteat singling to bring Tilton in.

UC answered in the bottom of the 4th, plating another run on an RBI single to right. The UC pitching staff finished out strong, only allowing one baserunner in the last three innings. Three strikeouts in the top of the 6th and consecutive outs in the top of the 7th closed out game one with the Golden Eagles winning 7-1.

Clay Hale and Carter Rust led Charleston with 3 RBI apiece and Tyler Dellerman aided with 1 RBI. Dwayne Sumier picked up the win after four innings, one run (earned), one hit and five strikeouts.

Thatcher Poteat had the lone RBI for the Bobcats with one of the two hits. Jack Tilton recorded the other hit for Wesleyan. Broderick Rohrbaugh took the loss, going three innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks.

Game 2
The Golden Eagles started off game two hot as well, blasting a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 1st. UC put more runs up on the board in the bottom of the 2nd on an RBI single and a 2-run single, making it 6-0 after two innings of play. After holding Wesleyan hitless in the top of the 3rd, Charleston plated a run on an RBI single to right and another run on an RBI triple to deep center in the bottom of the 3rd.

WVWC finally got into the hit column in the top of the 4th as Sam Ingram and Jack Tilton singled back-to-back and Thatcher Poteat brought Ingram in with a single. Later in the inning, Cole Shearer plated Tilton with an RBI single to cut it to 8-2. A single and wild pitch put the UC lead back at eight in the bottom of the 4th. The Bobcat bats were silent for the rest of the game as Charleston capped off the four-game sweep with a 10-2 victory.

Andre Martinez led UC with 3 RBI with Drew Klaserner and Hector Carreon-Herra added 2 RBI each. Dan Sykes pitched four innings of relief, getting the win after striking out five and only allowing one hit and one walk.

Cole Shearer and Thatcher Poteat both picked up an RBI for the Bobcats. Hunter Eplin surrendered eight runs (all earned) on seven hits and three walks in three innings of work, taking the loss.
