Preview: Baseball Back On The Road To Face West Virginia State In Four Game Series

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan Baseball is back on the road after their weekend homestand as they travel to Institute to take on West Virginia State in a four-game series. The Yellow Jackets have won seven of the last eight meetings with the Bobcats.

THE SCHEDULE
Friday vs West Virginia State at 1 & 3:30 p.m.
Saturday vs West Virginia State at 1 & 3:30 p.m.

THE BOBCATS
Wesleyan enters (7-18) overall and (3-9) in MEC play, previously getting swept this past weekend in doubleheaders with Fairmont State and Frostburg State.

The Bobcat offense is led by Jack Tilton, who is batting .345 with 29 hits, six doubles, one triple, 2 HR and 14 RBI. Devin Johnson leads the team with 20 RBI and is one of six Bobcats with double-digit RBIs. Hunter Eplin continues to be the strength of the rotation, holding onto a 4.42 ERA, 2-3 record and three complete games.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE YELLOW JACKETS
The Yellow Jackets enter (14-11) overall and (9-3) in MEC play, coming in winners in four out of their last five games. WVSU swept Notre Dame College and Alderson Broaddus last weekend, including 30 runs in two games against NDC.

WV State has hit a combined 35 HR as a team this year with two separate Yellow Jackets hitting seven each. Connor Fizer is batting .310 with 7 HR and 18 RBI while Nathan Paulsen is hitting .247 with 7 HR and 21 RBI. In four starts (seven appearances) this season, Tyler Lafferty is posting a 1.24 ERA, 2-1 record and 29 strikeouts in 29 innings of work.

Sean Loyd is in his 9th season leading the WVSU Baseball program. During his time at WVSU, Loyd has won the MEC regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Regionals in 2015, won the MEC South Division title with a 24-8 conference mark in 2016 and MEC Coach of the Year. He served as an assistant with the program for 20 years in which WVSU claimed 11 conference championships and two NCAA DII World Series appearances in that time.
