CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan Softball team split with the Charleston Golden Eagles today in the Capital City, falling in 10 innings in the first game 2-1 and shutting out UC 3-0 in game two. With today's split, the Bobcats still sit .5 game back from Charleston in the MEC South Divisional standings.
Game 1
Morgan Norris singled up the middle in the 1
st inning to get the bats going for the Bobcats and
Abigail O'Shields sat the UC order down 1-2-3. The Bobcats made two costly errors in the bottom of the 3
rd as Charleston's Brionna Bowman singled and then stole second, advanced to third on one error and got home on another error by Wesleyan.
Alli Robinson doubled in the top of the 4
th with one out and was pinch ran for by
Megan McMackin who was able to get to third. McMackin was left stranded after a flyout ended the inning. Wesleyan had another runner in scoring position with two outs in the top of the 5
th, ending the inning once again with a flyout.
Abigail O'Shields sat the UC order down in order to end the inning as WVWC still trailed 1-0 after five innings of play.
In the top of the 6
th,
Taylor Swartz singled to start the inning and stole second, sitting in scoring position with no outs. Three flyouts got the Golden Eagles back in the dugout unscathed. Down to their final at-bats in the top of the 7
th, Wesleyan tied the game at 1 with an
Amillia Howard solo shot to left-center. O'Shields forced the game into extras after putting UC down in order. WVWC put at least one runner in scoring position in the 8
th, 9
th and 10
th inning but couldn't get a run home. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10
th walked it off for the Golden Eagles, winning 2-1 in 10 innings.
Hannah Rose and Brionna Bowman had the only hits for UC and Reagan West had an RBI. Brianna McCown pitched all 10 innings, giving up one run (earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out eight.
Taylor Swartz and
Alyssa Rohr both had two hits apiece and
Amillia Howard's pinch-hit HR was the only RBI for the Bobcats.
Abigail O'Shields pitched a masterful 9.2 innings, giving up two runs (unearned) on two hits and nine strikeouts.
Game 2
Hallie Dinklocker started the game with a walk and moved into scoring position on a bunt and a passed ball. A sacrifice fly from
Morgan Norris put the Bobcats up 1-0 early.
Andie Dizon and
Kaitlyn Rizor put together singles in the top of the 2
nd inning but consecutive outs ended any chance of more runs. The Bobcats extended their lead in the top of the 3
rd when
Taylor Swartz doubled to left and
Morgan Norris powered one over the centerfield fence, making it 3-0.
Kendall Stoffel had her biggest challenge in the bottom of the 6
th as Charleston had multiple singles and put those runners at second and third with two outs. Stoffel didn't allow a run, forcing a groundout to
Grace Smith to end the inning. The Golden Eagles didn't budge in the bottom of the 7
th as Stoffel closed UC out to get their 30
th win of the season.
Jeritza Montero led Charleston with two hits, going 2-3 at the plate. Danielle Bauer was given the loss, going seven innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk.
Morgan Norris had 3 RBI to lead the Bobcats and
Andie Dizon finished with two hits.
Kendall Stoffel picked up her MEC-leading 15
th win, pitching a complete game and surrendering no runs on four hits and striking out three.

Wesleyan goes up the road on Wednesday for a midweek MEC matchup with Davis & Elkins for a doubleheader at 2 & 4 p.m.
