Charleston Withstands Wesleyan in 81-77 Bobcat Defeat

by Ryan Drag, WVWC Sports Information

It was like David and Goliath as the number one team in the conference, The University of Charleston, crept by the last-place team in the conference, West Virginia Wesleyan College, in a nail-biting 81-77 victory on Wednesday in Buckhannon.

The Bobcats were on fire shooting 57 percent from the three-point line, but it wasn't enough to beat the Golden Eagles. The leader in three-point field goals per game in the conference, Deiker Padrino, had a terrific night as he put up 20 points and shot 67 percent from beyond the arc. Wesleyan had three additional players that scored double-digit points in Jalen Canada (16 points), Curtis Litton (15 points), and Alex Mirhosseini (14 points).

Leading by nine points in the first half and getting outscored 43-38 in the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to take control as they shot 54 percent from the field. Shunta Wilson (26 points) lead Charleston to victory as he only missed one shot, shooting an impressive 11-of-12, with three of them from beyond the three-point stripe. He was accompanied by Eddie Colbert III (15 points) and Tyler Eberhart (13 points) in crucial double-digit performances.

Wesleyan hits the road to face West Virginia State University in Institute, WV on Saturday, Feb 24 at 4 p.m.
