BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Despite a valiant third-quarter comeback effort led by quarterback
Logan Landers and a surging receiving corps, West Virginia Wesleyan College (0-2) fell to Clarion University (2-0) by a final score of 48-20 on Thursday evening under the lights at Cebe Ross Field.
Clarion jumped out to a commanding 41-0 lead by halftime, executing an aggressive, balanced attack that kept the Bobcats on their heels. Golden Eagles quarterback Anthony Guercio tossed three touchdown passes, including a pair to Davon Jones, and added two rushing scores of his own.
Clarion racked up 306 rushing yards on 49 carries (6.2 avg), with Guercio (6 rushes, 104 yards, 2 TDs) and Khalon Simmons (9 carries, 71 yards, 2 TDs) doing most of the work.
After a halftime regroup, the Bobcats returned to the field with new energy.
Logan Landers orchestrated a trio of touchdown drives in the third quarter to cut into the Clarion lead. Landers connected with
Jordan Heyward on a 19-yard strike at the 8:22 mark to put Wesleyan on the board. Just minutes later, he found Isaiah Peoples for a 22-yard score.
The highlight of the night came on a 5-play, 70-yard drive capped by a deep 23-yard touchdown pass to
Joseph Triplett, who finished with 3 catches for 60 yards and a score.
Landers finished the night 20-of-33 for 185 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
Despite the early trouble, Wesleyan defenders battled throughout.
Riley Slaughter led the defense with 8 total tackles, including 2 tackles for loss and a sack.
Victor Georges made a crucial red-zone interception in the first half.
Clarion's defense, meanwhile, limited the Bobcats to just 31 rushing yards, and held Wesleyan to 1-of-11 on third down.
On special teams,
Alexander DeHart converted 2 of 3 extra point attempts for the Bobcats. WVWC's
Bryson Johnston punted 7 times for 196 yards (28.0 avg).
The Bobcats will look to capture its first win of the 2025 season next Thursday, Sept. 11, when they host Ohio Dominican. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m.
