Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team earned a pair of victories Sunday at the WVWC Tournament in Salem, Va., holding off Pitt-Johnstown in a high-scoring opener before grinding out a 3–2 win over Indiana (Pa.) in the afternoon contest.
GAME ONE: WV Wesleyan 10, Pitt-Johnstown 9
In a contest that featured 25 combined runs, 27 combined hits, and lead changes throughout, the Bobcats held on for a 10-9 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in a game that wasn't decided until the final out.
Wesleyan burst out of the gate in the top of the first inning, sending eight batters to the plate and plating three runs on four hits.
Lynzee Hague sparked the rally with a double, and
Josi Fix followed with an RBI single to score Hague.
Reagan Winn then singled home Fix, and
Gracey Arnold capped the inning with an RBI double to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
Pitt-Johnstown answered immediately in the bottom of the first, tying the game at 3-3 on the strength of a two-RBI double from Mia Smith and an RBI single by Taylor Lupfer.
Wesleyan retook the lead with a two-run third inning, as
Sydney Lowen delivered a key two-RBI single to score
Reagan Winn and
Gracey Arnold, pushing the advantage to 5-3. But the Panthers roared back in their half of the third, scoring three runs off starter
Avery Orille to take a 6-5 lead. The frame included RBI singles from Avery Smiach, Kaylee Smolko, and Annabelle Helt.
Starting pitcher
Avery Orille was relieved by
Josi Fix to begin the third inning, a move that proved pivotal. Fix, who had begun the game as the designated player, transitioned to the circle and steadied the Wesleyan staff, ultimately earning the victory.
The Bobcats broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning.
Madison Austra's two-RBI single knotted the score, and after a series of walks loaded the bases, an error by Pitt-Johnstown's second baseman allowed another run to score.
Lynzee Hague then delivered the knockout blow with a two-RBI single, stretching the Wesleyan lead to 10-6 and chasing UPJ starter Avery Smiach.
Pitt-Johnstown would not go quietly. In a tense bottom of the seventh, the Panthers plated two runs on singles by Meghan McDonough and a bases-loaded walk issued to Mylee Gdula, pulling within 10-9. Reliever
Morgan Greene entered and induced a game-ending strikeout to preserve the win.
Fix was credited with the victory, improving to 1-1 on the season. She allowed three earned runs over 4.1 innings of relief work, scattering eight hits while walking one. Greene recorded the final out.
Offensively, the Bobcats were led by
Gracey Arnold, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
Reagan Winn added a 2-for-4 effort with three runs scored, while
Lynzee Hague went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Sydney Lowen contributed a 1-for-2 line with two RBI and drew two walks.
GAME TWO: WV Wesleyan 3, Indiana (Pa.) 2
In the afternoon contest, pitcher
Morgan Greene turned in a complete-game performance as the Bobcats edged Indiana (Pa.) 3-2 to improve to 7-10 on the season.
Wesleyan trailed early after Indiana's Jaycee Haidze launched a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats answered in the bottom of the second when
Reagan Winn connected on a solo home run to knot the game at 1-1.
Wesleyan seized the lead for good in the third inning.
Jaelyn Riley led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by
Lynzee Hague.
Josi Fix came through with an RBI single to score Riley, putting the Bobcats ahead 2-1.
The lead grew to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth in dramatic fashion.
Emma Putman doubled to lead off the inning, and pinch runner
Abigail Borello took her place on the bases. Pinch hitter
Kalyn Dean then delivered a clutch RBI single to score Borello and push the advantage to 3-1.
Indiana made things interesting in the sixth when Erin Drotos doubled home Jess Cekada, cutting the deficit to 3-2. But Stokes slammed the door from there, retiring six of the final seven batters she faced to close out the complete-game win.
Greene threw all seven innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs. She walked three but struck out none, relying heavily on her defense. Greene induced 17 fly ball outs and four ground ball outs.
Haidze was the standout performer for Indiana (Pa.), going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and an RBI. Indiana starter Kendall Young took the loss, falling to 2-4, after allowing three earned runs over six innings.
Wesleyan opens its 2026 home slate with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. The Bobcats host Fairmont State on Saturday, Mar. 21 and then return to the diamond to host Frostburg State on Sunday. Both days start at 1 p.m.
