Glenville State Takes Two from Wesleyan on Saturday

The Bobcats battled Glenville State in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader on Saturday, but came up short in both contests, falling 9-1 in six innings in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Wesleyan struck first in the top of the opening inning. Jaelyn Riley singled, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Lynzee Hague, and scored on Gracey Arnold's RBI double to right-center to give the Bobcats a 1-0 edge. Glenville State answered immediately in the bottom half, using defensive miscues and a big swing from Hannah Howe to seize control. After a pair of Wesleyan errors helped extend the inning, Howe delivered a bases-clearing triple that was compounded by another error, allowing four runs to score in the frame as Glenville State surged in front 5-1.

Glenville added another run in the second when Delany Warnick singled and later came home on Emily Nolan's RBI groundout, then padded the lead with two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Howe drove in another run with a double in the fifth, while Delany Warnick's RBI double in the sixth brought home the final run of the game. Wesleyan managed just three hits in the opener, with Arnold's RBI double, Riley's leadoff single, and a single by Josi Fix accounting for the Bobcats' offense. Glenville finished with eight hits, led by Howe's 2-for-3, five-RBI performance.

Arnold paced the Bobcats in Game 1 by going 1-for-2 with a walk and the team's lone RBI, while Riley scored the only run and stole a base. Fix added a hit, but Glenville State pitcher Kylie Burdick kept Wesleyan in check the rest of the way, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six over six innings. Avery Orille took the loss for Wesleyan, working 5.1 innings. Of Glenville State's nine runs, six were earned, with the Pioneers taking advantage of three Bobcat errors in the field.

Game 2 was much tighter, with Wesleyan hanging around throughout the afternoon. Glenville State scored twice in the first inning, both unearned, after Shelby McDaniels singled and later scored on an outfield error, while Zailees Seda came home on a wild pitch. The Pioneers added what proved to be the decisive run in the third when Macie Duvall came off the bench and tripled to left-center to plate Seda for a 3-0 advantage.

Wesleyan broke through in the fifth. Reagan Winn started the inning with a double to right-center, and Josi Fix followed with an RBI single to right to cut the deficit to 3-1. That would be as close as the Bobcats could get, however, as Glenville starter Maci Boggess induced two double plays in the game and held Wesleyan scoreless over the final two frames. The Bobcats put a runner aboard in both the sixth and seventh innings, getting a bunt single from Riley and a single from Gracey Arnold, but could not generate the tying rally.

Winn led Wesleyan's offense in the second game by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double, while Fix finished 1-for-3 with the Bobcats' only RBI. Riley and Arnold added one hit apiece as Wesleyan collected five hits in the contest. In the circle, Mackenzie O'Brien turned in a steady outing despite the loss, pitching all six innings and allowing just one earned run on six hits. Glenville State's Boggess earned the win after scattering five hits and striking out three in a complete-game effort.
