Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Loses to an Aggressive Urbana Team

Urbana, OH -- West Virginia Wesleyan Men's Soccer lost the nightcap on Thursday against Urbana 1-0. The Bobcats were stifled by an aggressive Urbana team that put 12 shots on goal, and drew 14 fouls on defense. That approach to the match worked well for the Blue Knights, as they held control of the game after they got up 1-0 from a Jasminko Dizdarevic strike from the top of the box in the 15th minute.

This loss halts a five-match unbeaten streak for the Bobcats, and they now sit at 7-3-1 overall, and hold a Mountain East Record of 6-2-1.

This was a very big win for Urbana late on Thursday night, they now move one point ahead of Wesleyan into 3rd place in the MEC with 20 points. Their record in conference is 6-2-2, and their record overall in the 2019 season is now 6-3-3.

Midfielders Joshua Tenney, and reigning MEC Offensive Player of the Week Nika Monaselidze, were the only Bobcats to put a shot on goal tonight. They each now have 10 and 9 on the season, respectively. Freshman GK Jeremy Collins did a good job managing the pressure that he faced all night, making quite a few great saves over the course of the match. The 12 total shots that came his way matches a season high total, and he stopped five of them right on the doorstep.

Senior M Jasminko Dizdarevic's goal was assisted by Freshman F Luke Nicholls, and it was his takeaway on the sideline, and ensuing pass into the middle, that created the scoring chance. In addition to the one he put into the back of the net, Dizdarevic also got two more shots on goal Thursday night. The Blue Knights play through the midfielder, so it is no surprise that he was featured heavily in this one as well. Junior GK Jakob Henriksen had a quiet night in net, making the two saves that he was forced to over the 90 minutes.

Wesleyan will hit the road again on Sunday, this time for a trip to Southern West Virginia to face Concord. The Mountain Lions are having a tough season, sitting at 1-6-2 in MEC play. The Bobcats will look to take control of this one early and get back into the win column.

Urbana will get a full five days off, as they wait until Wednesday to travel east to take on the class of the MEC, undefeated Charleston. It will be a matchup of two of the top teams in the league, and the Blue Knights will look to use the extra practice time to prepare for what should be one of the best games played in the state of West Virginia this year.
