Box Score Beckley, WV -- For the second time in three games, Sophomore F
Nika Monaselidze won the match for Wesleyan with a late goal. Last Sunday, he put in an overtime winner against Notre Dame, and this Sunday, he found the net in the 85th minute to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead which they would hold on to secure the win. Concord matched a Wesleyan goal in the first period, and the two squads were deadlocked in the second period until Monaselidze put one home.
A big win for the Bobcats, they now have 22 points and 7-2-1 record in the Mountain East Conference, which should move them to third place. It will most likely be a four-team race to the top of of the MEC the rest of the way, and Wesleyan will get another crack at each of the two teams in front of them, Notre Dame and Charleston.
It would have been an upset for Concord to steal a point from this one, so they are undoubtedly disappointed to give up the late goal and the match. They move to 1-7-2 in the MEC, and currently sit in seventh place.
The first goal of the match was the first goal of the season scored by Wesleyan's Freshman M
Nugzar Barkaia. He beat the keeper to his left side in the 25th minute, however the Bobcats could not hold the lead for very long, giving up an equalizer in the 30th minute. The game was knotted up at 1-1 until the 85th minute, when
Nika Monaselidze took it himself and beat the keeper to his right side to give Wesleyan the lead they would not relinquish. The Bobcats dominated the game throughout in terms of possession, and out-shot Concord 14-4. Both goals were scored unassisted, and Monaselidze's was his fourth of the season.
Concord's 30th minute equalizer was scored by Junior D Bruno Baptista, it was his second goal of the season, and the third of his career. Sophomore F Daniel Culverwell grabbed his second assist of the season on the goal.
An important week of home games is ahead for Wesleyan, as they play host to Wheeling on Wednesday at 7 pm, and Charleston on Sunday at 1 pm. The Bobcats must take care of a Wheeling team on Wednesday that sits at 1-9 in the MEC, but they must stay sharp for first place Charleston on Sunday. The Golden Eagles have yet to lose in MEC play, and a victory by the Bobcats can close the gap significantly between Charleston and themselves in the standings.
Concord hosts a Davis & Elkins team on Wednesday in Athens that is in the middle of the pack at 4-6.
