Buckhannon, WV – The twelfth ranked team in the country, and the top team in the Mountain East Conference, came to town on Sunday afternoon. West Virginia Wesleyan Men's Soccer knew this game against Charleston was going to be a tough one, but they weren't able to stop the high-flying offense of the Golden Eagles. It ended 3-0, and it was a deserved score line for the visitors.
With a win, Wesleyan would have been able to stay in the competition to finish at the top of the Mountain East Conference standings. However, the Bobcats, who were without their Captain Luca Falconieri, could not make that happen. They dropped all three points, and they now sit at 9-4-1 on the season, and 8-3-1 in the MEC.
Charleston continues their perfect season in the Mountain East Conference. They are yet to lose a conference match, and have only split points once, with Notre Dame last week. They hold a 12-2-1 record on the season, and a 12-0-1 mark in the MEC.
A positive note for the Bobcats on Sunday was their shooting percentage. They put four of their five shots on target, led by Sophomore M Jorge De Ona Garcia with two. A pair of defenders also got into the offensive action, Junior Maycon Santos Dias and Sophomore Connor Hartwell each registered a shot on goal. Freshman GK Jeremy Collins made four saves in seven chances.
Charleston's scoring efforts were started by Freddy Tracey in the ninth minute, when he headed home a perfect cross from Jesus Cabanas. In the 61st minute, Ettore Ballestracci buried home an assist from Joao Lima, and Eduardo Iranzo called game in the 81st minute when he finished off his own run through the defense to make it 3-0.
On Wednesday, the Bobcats will travel to South Euclid, OH to take on a Notre Dame team that is now ahead of them in the standings. This match will go along way to determine who will finish second in the MEC.
Charleston will look to keep their record season rolling when they host Davis & Elkins on Wednesday.
