South Euclid, OH --Â West Virginia Wesleyan Men's Soccer traveled to Notre Dame College on Wednesday for a noon match with postseason implications. Coming into this one, Notre Dame was sitting in second place in the Mountain East Conference with 26 points, and Wesleyan was in third with 25 points. However, more than one point would separate this match after the 90 minutes were over, as Notre Dame won it 3-1.
The Bobcats jumped onto the scoresheet first with a tremendous deep shot from Senior Midfielder and Captain
Luca Falconieri in the 27th minute. Falconieri's goal came from 35 yards out, and it was his team-leading sixth of the season. The pass that lead to the goal came from Junior
Maycon Santos Dias, and it was his first assist of 2019.Â
Wesleyan's lead was undone by Notre Dame's Niklas Bohlin. The Swedish Junior Midfielder has been a force against all MEC teams, and Wednesday may have been his best match of the season. He followed up Wesleyan's goal by driving home a free kick from right outside the box no more than one minute later on the clock. After taking the Falcons into the break tied up, Bohlin came out and buried another free kick, this time from further out, in the 47th minute to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead. Wednesday's goals were his 7th and 8th of the season. Sophomore Arthur Moraes capped off the game with a penalty-kick goal in the 86th minute for his second of the year.Â
The Bobcats now fall four points behind Notre Dame for second place in the MEC. They hold an 8-4-1 record in the conference, and 9-5-1 overall in 2019. There are three regular season games left this season, and with three middle-of-the-pack opponents in those games, finishing the year with 34 regular season points is not unrealistic. The first of those remaining matchups is a trip to take on West Liberty in the Northern Panhandle on Sunday at 1 PM.
Wesleyan will be hoping for a slip-up from Notre Dame in their remaining games, but with two out of Falcons' last three coming against bottom teams in the MEC, it seems unlikely. They host last-place Wheeling on Monday at 2 PM.
