Men's and Women's Soccer Each Take Care of West Liberty

Two Late Season Wins for Postseason Contenders

West Liberty, WV -- Before the West Virginia Wesleyan Men's and Women's Soccer teams traveled up to the Northern Panhandle on Sunday, both were safely into the postseason tournament, but looking to improve their seeding. Sunday's performances against West Liberty will do nothing but help their cause, as both played solid games and took 1-0 victories home with them. The Men were in control of the game throughout, and finally got their winner when Sophomore Midfielder Victor Medellin took it himself through the box and buried his ensuing shot in the 58th minute. The Lady Bobcats had to wait a bit longer, as it took until the 65th minute for Junior Midfielder Kayla Fay to do the same and secure a 1-0 lead that they would never relinquish.

The win for the Men brings them to 10-5-1 on the season, and they hold 28 points with a 9-4-1 record in the Mountain East Conference. The Women move up to 10-6 overall, and they hold 24 points with an 8-4 record in the MEC.

The Men started the day off in powerful fashion. Even though they only put in one goal, they dominated the shot chart over West Liberty. Overall, the Bobcats fired seventeen shots, nine of which hit the target. If it weren't for the stellar play of the Hilltopper goalkeeper, the match could have been more lopsided on the score sheet. West Liberty was only able to muster up one shot on net, so the Bobcats Freshman GK Jeremy Collins was not forced into action often on Sunday. The goal from Victor Medellin was his first of his Bobcat career. Fellow Sophomores Carlos Sanchez Mora and Javier De Ona Garcia joined Medellin in putting multiple shots on net. Those three, along with Nika Monaselidze, Connor Hartwell, and Luis Diaz, form a tremendous group of sophomores that will be a force in the MEC through 2021.

The Women's game was a more tightly contested match, as the shot and possession differentials were not as drastic. However, the Lady Bobcats still took care of business and came away with all three points. They did outshoot the Lady Hilltoppers 8-4 on goal, and Senior GK Chelsea Hubner put up yet another clean sheet. She has blanked opponents for the full 90 minutes six times this season. Kayla Fay untied the match in the 65th minute with her goal from six yards out, and it was her fifth of the season. In the two matches this week, Fay had three goals.

Both teams will host a regular-season match in Buckhannon for the final time this season on Wednesday. The Women will kick things off against Wheeling at 4 PM, and the Men will follow up against Frostburg State at 7 PM. Both opponents are under .500 in MEC play, so the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats will look to continue pushing for a top three seed in the MEC tournament with a victory.

Both Men's and Women's teams for West Liberty will travel down to Elkins for matches with the Senators on Wednesday.
