West Virginia Wesleyan Football plays host to the Hilltoppers of West Liberty on Saturday. The Bobcats will be looking to grab their second win of the season, and they will come into the game playing their best offensive football of the season. They have put up over 900 yards of offense over the past two games, and were unlucky to have both victories stolen out from under them by game-winning drives from their opponents. As opposed to the offensive momentum that Wesleyan is coming in with, West Liberty has scored only 24 total points over their past two games..
Wesleyan's Redshirt Junior QB
Jarrett Northrop has been one of the best passers in the Mountain East Conference over the past two weeks, and he has been generous in spreading the wealth around the receiving corps. His favorite target is Junior WR
Kenny Lewis Jr., who has has found seven times for a total of 153 yards and two touchdowns against WVSU and Concord. He has also developed strong connections with Senior
Derek Drapen and Redshirt Freshman
Devin Taylor, who each have ten catches in that span and 123 and 113 receiving yards, respectively. If Redshirt Freshman RB
Kord Jenkins can build off of his two touchdown performance last week against Concord, it will give the Bobcats a balanced offensive attack.
On the defensive side, Sophomore S
John Merica and Senior DE
Aman Speed Jr. are having the best seasons of their career. For Merica, even though he lost the MEC lead in solo tackles last week, he is still third in the NCAA in that stat with 61. Speed Jr. has multiplied his season production the last two games, collecting five tackles for loss and two sacks. West Liberty has not played well offensively as of late, and Speed Jr.'s pass rush could further inhibit their success moving the football. Sophomore DB
Ephraim Moore is also having a strong season, he is fourth in the MEC with ten pass breakups.
The Bobcats defense will be facing a senior quarterback for the fourth straight week, as the Hilltoppers are lead by Zach Phillips under center. He ranks one place behind Northrop on the MEC passing leaderboard in fifth with 229 yards per game. In the backfield, Junior Quincy Wimbish gets the bulk of the carries, and he can be described as a power back that is most effective around the goal line. He has punched it in six times in 2019. West Liberty has two dangerous receivers that receive most of the targets in Junior Isaiah Robinson and Sophomore Thomas Cole. Cole is a 6'5 Wake Forest transfer who is seventh in the MEC with 46 receptions.Â
A win on Saturday would mark a record improvement for the Bobcats in 2019 from last season. Coach Testa has the team playing dynamically on offense, and if they can clean up the penalties, they should be in a good position to win this game. That result would be a great way to send out the fourteen seniors, who will be honored approximately thirty minutes before a 1 PM kickoff at Cebe Ross Field.
