West Virginia Wesleyan Men's and Women's Basketball host Wheeling on Saturday at the Rockefeller Center in Buckhannon. The games will be apart of an exciting day on campus, as it also features an open house for prospective students. Saturday provides an opportunity for both teams to stay among the leaders of the Mountain East Conference early on this season.
The Men are coming off one of the biggest wins in recent memory, defeating West Liberty on the hilltop on Wednesday night. The Bobcats became only the eighth team to defeat the Hilltoppers at home this decade, as West Liberty has the highest home winning percentage over that time across all divisions of the NCAA. The team managed to erase a fourteen point deficit with seven minutes remaining, and finished off the comeback with a last second three-pointer fromÂ
Dusan Vicentic. That game was apart of a recent stretch of good play from Wesleyan, defeating Frostburg State in the MEC opener, and leading the whole game against Fairmont State before succumbing to a final second shot.Â
Wheeling has been a surprise so far this season. Picked to finish last in the conference preseason poll, new Head Coach Will Ryan has his team playing good basketball out of the gates this season. He has a lot of new faces, and returners with much increased roles. The top returner is the Cardinals' leading scorer and rebounder, Emmanuel Ansong, and the top newcomer is Jordan Reid. One thing the Cardinals do not do well however, is create offense through ball movement, as their leader in assists only averages 2.7 per game. If Wesleyan can slow the game down, and force Wheeling to play half-court offense against the zone defense, the Cardinals ability to "run-and-gun" can be taken away. With a win, Wesleyan would remain tied for first place in the MEC.
On the Women's side, the recent stretch of games has not been so kind. The Lady Bobcats have been taken down in their last two games by Fairmont State and West Liberty, and struggled on both sides of the ball in each. However, the season is still early, and the team showed great promise weeks prior in wins over Mansfield, Shippensburg, and Frostburg State.Â
Nicole Gilyard is the do-it-all senior, and the Lady Bobcats rely on her steady scoring, rebounding, and defense. The performance of JuniorÂ
Brittany Stawovy has been linked to the performance of the team early on this season, as when she has the shot the ball well, the Lady Bobcats tend to come out on top.Â
Wheeling has struggled to the tune of a 1-5 overall record this season, and have yet to pick up their first win in the MEC. Both teams come in averaging the same amount of points given up, but Wheeling has actually played better offensively than the Lady Bobcats. The Cardinals are led by the duo of Lily Ritz and Khira Burton. The former leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging a double-double. Burton is second on the team in scoring, and leads the team in assists running the show on offense. This will be a direction game on Saturday. With a win, Wesleyan would get back to .500 in the conference and remain in the pack, but with a loss both teams would leave with a 1-3 record.
Tip-off for the Women's game is set for 2 PM, and the Men's game will tip-off approximately at 4 PM or thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
