Next Up Preview: Frostburg State

Battle of the Bobcats Wednesday in Buckhannon

Matchup

Wesleyan Basketball returns to the Rockefeller Center on Wednesday night when they host the Bobcats of Frostburg State. The home Bobcats will come into the contest two games ahead of Frostburg in the Mountain East Conference standings at 5-5. They are coming off a disappointing performance at Glenville State on Saturday, when despite all secondary statistics playing equal, they were beaten by twenty points. The key to that result was three-point shooting, as the Pioneers couldn't miss at some points of the game and Wesleyan didn't keep up. Similar to the gameplan against Glenville and Phil Bledsoe, Coach Nick Patella will have to gameplan against Frostburg's Daniel Alexander. The senior guard is currently second in the MEC in scoring, and is certainly the focal point of the road Bobcats' offense. Most team stats point to this being an evenly matched contest, however Wesleyan has a chance to keep up in the standings by grabbing a home win against a 3-7 team.

Key Statistics

Frostburg's Daniel Alexander is second in the MEC in scoring (21.9 ppg).
Frostburg has the lowest ranked shooting offense but highest ranked shooting defense (41.4%, 43.4%)
Wesleyan and Frostburg have virtually identical scoring and defense averages per game (77.2, 77.1), (84.4, 85.1).
Luka Petrovic plays the ninth most minutes per game (33.9) and is second in the MEC in assists (5.3 apg).

Storylines

Wesleyan will likely get the return of Ross Young on Wednesday, as he was out with an ankle injury last week against Concord and Glenville State. The junior forward is a key cog in the Bobcats offense, and has been one of the top offensive rebounders in the league all season. His creation of second-chance points, and constant vertical threat, were greatly missed over the last two games. Another guard dominated team, Frostburg should have trouble matching up with the size and strength inside of Young and Dusan Vicentic. Look for Wesleyan to keep the game at their pace at home, and feed the big guys early. Watch for Tommie Pope to be deployed throughout the game as a defensive specialist to get into Daniel Alexander. With Frostburg on Wednesday and Davis & Elkins on Saturday, this is a big week for Wesleyan to jump back into the top five or six in the MEC standings.
