Men's Basketball Preview: Frostburg State, Fairmont State & Shepherd

Wesleyan welcomes Frostburg State to open the MEC slate before trips to conference powerhouse Fairmont State and former MEC foe Shepherd.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team will open its Mountain East Conference slate against Frostburg State on Saturday (Nov. 20) at 4 p.m. inside the Rockefeller Center before hitting the road for another MEC matchup at Fairmont State on Tuesday (Nov. 23) at 7:30 p.m. WVWC will return to non-conference play at Shepherd during Thanksgiving weekend on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m.

Win Number One
Derek Sloan is in his first season as a head coach and picked up his first career victory at the helm after Wesleyan held off Seton Hill, 85-79 on Monday (Nov. 15) inside the Rockefeller Center.
Sloan was an assistant coach for WVWC men's basketball before being elevated to head coach on Sept. 15, 2021.

Hibbitt's Hot Start
Jayden Hibbitt scored 15 points in the season opener at Indiana (Pa.) on Friday, Nov. 12 and he followed that up with 16 points versus Pitt-Johnstown the next night. Hibbitt led the Bobcats in scoring on Monday, Nov. 15 with 21 points while also hauling in eight rebounds in the home opener against Seton Hill.

Moran from Deep
Shawn Moran is off to a 9-for-14 start from beyond the arc. He started the season 4-for-5 from 3-point range on Nov. 12 at Indiana (Pa.). Moran made a pair of clutch treys down the stretch to help WVWC defeat Seton Hill on Nov. 15.

Doing a Little Bit of Everything
Tommie Pope ripped down six rebounds and distributed six assists in the season opener at IUP. The senior from Portsmouth, Va., scored a career-high 11 points with six rebounds and three assists in the win over Seton Hill.

Braeden McGrew spread out eight assists in the season opener at the IRMC/Hilton Garden Inn Classic versus the Crimson Hawks. He scored a season-high 13 points against Seton Hill.

UVA Wise transfer Joseph Keenan buried five 3-pointers on Monday (Nov. 15) to help Wesleyan past Seton Hill.

Scouting Frostburg State
Frostburg State is off to an 0-3 start after a 76-64 loss against Shepherd on Wednesday (Nov. 17). Junior guard Agyei Edwards is the current scoring (15.3) and rebounding (7.7) leader for Frostburg State through three games. Sophomore guard Jaylon Johnson paced FSU with 14 points in the setback versus Shepherd.

Frostburg State alumnus Sean Brown is the head coach of the Bobcats. Last season, Frostburg State finished 4-12 against a schedule that featured only MEC contests.

Scouting Fairmont State
As of Nov. 16, the Fighting Falcons were ranked No. 21 in the D2SIDA Top 25 poll and were 3-0 overall after a 95-92 barnburner win at California (Pa.) on Thursday (Nov. 18). Fairmont State took Division I Bowling Green down to the wire in a 91-89 overtime loss in exhibition play on Nov. 14.

Through three games, Isaiah Sanders is off to a phenomenal start averaging 23.3 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game. Seth Younkin is averaging 10.3 rebounds a night after the first three games of the season.

Tim Koenig enters his second season in charge of Fairmont State men's basketball after leading to the Fighting Falcons to an MEC Tournament title and NCAA Division II Tournament appearance last season.

Scouting Shepherd
The former MEC member currently in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference sits at 2-1 overall with one game on Nov. 20 against Lincoln (Pa.) before welcoming the Bobcats to Shepherdstown on Nov. 20.

Four Shepherd student-athletes are averaging double-digit scoring (Dan McClain-Corey, Kyle Daggett, Cam Stephens and Jon Preston).

Justin Namolik has been the head men's basketball coach at Shepherd since 2009.

West Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball will head back to the Rockefeller Center for another matchup with a nationally ranked team when the West Liberty Hilltoppers visit Buckhannon on Wednesday, Dec. 1 for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
