Men's Soccer Preview: Concord

After a 2-1 victory over Wheeling in the season opener, WVWC men's soccer will take on Concord on Sunday, Feb. 28 at Ross Field.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team is scheduled to welcome Concord to Ross Field on Sunday, Feb. at 2 p.m.

Quick Hits
  • Last time out against Wheeling, captain Andrew Polychroniadis marked his comeback from ACL reconstruction with a goal from the penalty spot to give the Bobcats the lead, before super sub Charlie Naylor delivered the game winner just 12 minutes into his Wesleyan debut to get the team off to a winning start in conference play.
  • WVWC head coach Gavin Donaldson reached an incredible milestone against Wheeling as the victory gave him his 350th win while in charge of the Bobcats. Donaldson now has 392 wins over his collegiate coaching career.
  • Forward Sinasi Emre Deniz will be looking to open his account for the season this weekend; the 6-2 sophomore scored 4 goals in 18 games (7 starts) during his freshman campaign.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Havrilla had a solid first outing in goal for the Bobcats against Wheeling including an acrobatic save in the second half.
Scouting Concord
The Mountain Lions come into the match on the back of a double overtime loss to Davis & Elkins in their season opener. They will be looking to rectify that defeat this weekend by grabbing the 3 points in Buckhannon.

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Brown made 7 saves against Davis & Elkins. Brown racked up three shutouts for Concord over the course of the 2019 season. Only junior forward Daniel Culverwell remains from Concord's top five goal scorers from the 2019 season.

In charge of the Mountain Lions is Steve Barrett. The Colchester, England native is in his 23rd season as a head coach at Concord, amassing experience with both the men's and women's programs during that time.

Last Season vs Concord
Last season, the Bobcats took the all three points in both matchups against the Mountain Lions. A comfortable 4-0 win at Culpepper Stadium on Sept. 25, 2019 was the first of the two, with Sinasi Emre Deniz, Connor Hartwell, and player-turned-volunteer coach Luca Falconieri (2) on the scoresheet.

The reverse fixture in Athens on Oct. 20, 2019 was less comfortable, but thanks to goals from Wesleyan's two Georgians Nugzar Barkaia and Nika Monaselidze, the Bobcats scraped by with a 2-1 victory.

Up Next
West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer is scheduled to travel to nearby Philippi for its next match at Alderson Broaddus on Sunday March, 7 for a 4:30 p.m. kick off.
