BUCKHANNON, W.Va.-- Gustavo Hernandez's last-second stunner gave the West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team (4-3-0) a 1-0 win over Frostburg State (2-5-0) on Sunday (April 11).
The first 25 minutes of the contest were relatively quiet as both teams were getting in the flow of the game. In the 26th minute, Frostburg had their best opportunity of the match. Randy Putnam was delivered a through ball from his teammate on the edge of the box. In a heads-up play by WVWC goalkeeper Sahil Dhunookkchand, he met Putnam at the edge of the box on a slide to break up the play and preserve the 0-0 game.
On the stroke of halftime,
Nika Monaselidze intercepted an errant Frostburg pass and drove the ball down the left side of the pitch. Monaselidze struck the ball with his right foot from 25 yards out and saw the ball slide past the Frostburg keeper to ricochet off the right woodwork.
In the second half, the Bobcats found themselves with another prime opportunity in the 52nd minute when a cross made its way to Emre Deniz's head. Deniz tried to place the ball into the bottom right corner, but Frostburg State's keeper Joel Assal made a diving save to keep the match deadlocked 0-0.
The scoreless match did not remain when in the dying seconds of the half as
Connor Hartwell sent a long ball over the top to create a chance. A Frostburg State defender tried to clear the ball out of their end, but the attempt made its way to
Gustavo Hernandez's foot. Hernandez struck the ball on a volley attempt from 30 yards out and in what might go down as the goal of the year, he rocketed it past Assal to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead with 8.8 seconds remaining.
The Bobcats will travel to Charleston on Sunday (April 18) in the regular-season finale at 4 p.m.
