Men's Soccer Preview: Wheeling & Charleston

The 2-0 Bobcats play host to Wheeling and No. 1 Charleston at Culpepper Stadium.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team welcomes both Wheeling and No. 1 Charleston to Buckhannon this week as Mountain East Conference play continues. The Bobcats face Wheeling on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. before Charleston comes to town on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m.

Quick Hits
  • Last time out, the Bobcats won their MEC opener, 2-1 on the road against Alderson Broaddus on Wednesday (Sept. 8) to move to 2-0 on the season.
  • Tanner Amos scored his first goal midway through the second half.
  • Connor Hartwell picked up his second goal in as many games to open the scoring with a header to increase his point total to five.
  • Nika Monaselidze provided the assists for both Hartwell and Amos' goals. He already has three assists this season.
  • English freshman Huewlan Wright made his Wesleyan debut against Alderson Broaddus coming off of the bench.
  • Freshman Isaac Branch made his first collegiate start at Alderson Broaddus.

Scouting Wheeling
Wheeling is off to a 2-0 start this season after holding off Alderson Broaddus for a 3-2 home victory on Saturday (Sept. 11). Venezuelan Miguel Martin scored twice in the win to earn MEC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Sophomore Richard Afolayanka paces Wheeling in points with six after picking up two goals and two assists in the first two games. The Cardinals have scored nine goals so far this season aided a 6-1 victory over Pitt-Johnstown.

Jim Regan enters his 36th season in charge of the Cardinals, boasting an overall record of 381-272-59.

Last Season vs. Wheeling
Last season, the Bobcats defeated Wheeling in WVWC's home opener thanks to an 88th minute winner from Charlie Naylor.

Scouting Charleston
The Golden Eagles are the top ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches Division-II preseason poll. Charleston won the Division-II national championship in 2019. UC is 3-0 after back-to-back road victories in MEC play against West Liberty (3-0 on Sept. 5) and Notre Dame (2-0 on Sept. 12).

Sophomore defender Lucas Christensen has picked up an assist in both conference games so far, whilst Marc Torrado and Nicolai Gunderson have kept one clean sheet apiece.

West Virginia Wesleyan alumnus, Daniel Smee is entering his fifth season on the Charleston coaching staff and his second as head coach. He has yet to lose a game at the helm.

Last Season vs. Charleston
Last season, the Golden Eagles went 2-0 against the Bobcats including a victory in the MEC Tournament semi-finals.
