Box Score Wheeling, WV – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats faced off with the University of Charleston Golden Eagles in the quarterfinals of the MEC Tournament. UC came into today's matchup on a hot streak winning four of their five past games, but the Lady Bobcats were looking for an upset win.
UC would lead 19-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Alexa Szelong scored over half of the Lady Bobcat's points in the first quarter with eight, while
Abi Gabauer added on four of her own and
Brittany Stawovy tacked on three more.
Wesleyan trailed UC by ten going into halftime, 38-28. Coming off of the bench,
Victoria Jackson would score eight points in the second quarter. UC would outshoot Wesleyan in the first two quarters, 47% to 33%. However, the Lady Bobcats would outrebound the Golden Eagles, 23 to 22.
The Lady Bobcats looked to turn the momentum in their favor at the start of the third quarter coming out strong with
Nicole Gilyard scoring four straight points and Gabauer adding on two more. This 6-0 run for the Lady Bobcats would cut the lead to 38-34. Wesleyan would trade points back and forth with UC in the third quarter, and Wesleyan would outscore UC, 23 to 16 points.
Summer Matlack would hit a three at the buzzer to end the third quarter with UC still leading 54-51.
UC would apply the pressure, scoring fourteen unanswered points at the beginning of the fourth quarter. This would give the Golden Eagles their largest lead with 17 points, but the Lady Bobcats would look to battle back and make the score 68- 61 with two minutes left in the game and then eventually 70-64 with 1-minute left. Wesleyan's late game push would not be enough to overcome the Golden Eagles and UC would go onto win the game 75-69.
Stawovy finished the game with 15 points and 6 rebounds, Gilyard and Szelong both with 11 points, and Gabauer with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
