The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan (1-1) women's basketball season is underway and will continue this week with two Mountain East Conference games. The 'Cats will welcome Frostburg State to the Rockefeller Center on Saturday (Nov. 20) for a 2 p.m. start. Wesleyan will play its first road game on Tuesday (Nov. 23) versus Fairmont State at 5:30 p.m. prior to Thanksgiving break.
Quick Hits
- Last week the Bobcats defeated Salem 78-77 on Wednesday (Nov. 17) for their first win of the season. Wesleyan dropped the season opener to Kentucky State, 89-77.
- Cierra Tolbert dropped 17 points and hauled in 18 rebounds in the Bobcats' victory over the Tigers. Tolbert leads WVWC in scoring with 32 points in the first two games.
- Freshman Electra Allembert posted double-digit point totals in her first two collegiate contests. Allembert drained the game-winning free throws versus Salem.
- Symphonie Bryant-Brown finished with 14 points in both games last week. Bryant-Brown has racked up 10 assists, 10 rebounds and four steals this season.
- Courtney Wilfong is the only Bobcat player with multiple successful three-point field goals. Wilfong sank three shots from beyond the arc and holds the highest field goal percentage (64.3%) and three-point field goal percentage (60.0%) on the team.
- Imani Jackson recorded the most free throw attempts (20) for Wesleyan in the first two games. Jackson shot 90% from the line, making 18 of 20 free throws.
- Head coach Brett Vincent picked up his first win at WVWC on Wednesday (Nov. 17). Vincent completed a nine-year stint (2012-21) as the head men's basketball coach at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C., where he is the all-time wins leader.
- Courtney Haines joined the WVWC women's basketball team as an assistant coach in October of 2021. Haines was a four-year starter at Penn State Fayette and earned a spot on the USCAA D-II All-American team in 2017.
Scouting Frostburg State
Frostburg State dropped their first three games of the season to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) members Pitt-Johnstown, Shepherd and Lock Haven.
The leading scorer for FSU is Stafford, Va., native Maggie Sharp, who is averaging 15.3 points per game. Sharp has made nine three-point baskets and is shooting 37.5% from three-point range. Arianna Briggs-Hall leads Frostburg State in rebounds per game (6.7).
Carrie Saunders enters her eighth season leading Frostburg State women's basketball. Saunders completed her playing career at Shepherd prior to the start of her coaching career.
Scouting Fairmont State
The Fighting Falcons defeated Clarion 92-68 in their season opener. Fairmont State fell in their next two games to Winston-Salem State and California (Pa.).
Sierra Kotchman returns to the floor for Fairmont State. Kotchman eclipsed 2,056 career points on Nov. 14 to break the Fairmont State school record for total points. The redshirt senior is averaging 13.7 points per game in the 2021-22 season. Sophomore Alyssa DeAngelo leads the Fighting Falcons with 16.3 points per game.
Fairmont State is led by Stephanie Anderson, who begins her third season in charge of Fighting Falcon women's basketball. Anderson started 82 games for California (Pa.) women's basketball during her playing career.
