Volleyball Preview: Charleston & Davis & Elkins

WVWC volleyball continues spring schedule after 2-1 start.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team will travel south for a match against Charleston on Tuesday (Feb. 16) at 7 p.m. before returning to the Rockefeller Center for a 7 p.m. match Friday (Feb. 19) versus the Senators of Davis & Elkins.
 
Quick Hits
  • Wesleyan defeated Concord on February 9 in three sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-18). The Bobcats dropped their first road match of the season to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State in five sets (25-20, 16-25, 11-25, 25-20, 15-17) on Friday (Feb. 12). WVWC holds a 2-1 record entering this week.
  • Freshman outside hitter Lexis Tatum has accumulated 48 kills in 13 sets played, averaging 3.69 kills/set. Tatum is sixth in the Mountain East Conference in kills/set. Tatum has scored the eighth most points by any player in the MEC with 52.5.
  • Sophomore setter Payton Hefner ranks third in the MEC in assists per set. Hefner has racked up 127 assists in 13 sets.
  • Freshman defensive specialist Autumn Molenhouse secured 43 digs in matches last week. Molenhouse is averaging 5.38 digs per set, good for fourth in the MEC.
  • Senior outside hitter Emily Doyle ranks sixth in hitting percentage in MEC play. Doyle has swung at a .389 percentage clip this season. Doyle has smashed four service aces and has picked up 32 digs in the first three matches.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Joelle Lalla leads the Bobcats with 9.0 blocks.
 
Scouting Charleston
The Bobcats edged the Golden Eagles in five sets in the season-opening match. Charleston enters the match against Wesleyan with an 0-2 record. Davis & Elkins swept Charleston on Feb. 5.
 
Sophomore middle blocker Beyonce Andrews leads the MEC in hitting percentage (.552 pct.). Freshman setter Gianni Blundell ranks first in the conference in service aces/set. Blundell posted four aces in her first two matches.
 
This will be the Golden Eagles' first match since Feb. 5.
 
Scouting Davis & Elkins
The Senators have gotten off to a hot start, winning their first three matches of the spring season. The MEC South Division leaders have picked up 152 kills in 11 sets over the young season.
 
Leading the D&E offensive attack is junior outside hitter Macie Magallon. Magallon, who was named MEC Player of the Week on Feb. 8, leads the conference with 5.55 kills/set and 6.64 points/set. Junior setter Brilane Manchego ranks second in the Mountain East with 11.09 assists/set.
 
The Senators are led by head coach Jordan Willis. Willis is in his first year in charge of Davis & Elkins volleyball. Prior to D&E, Willis was the head coach of Otero Junior College in Colorado.
 
Up Next
WVWC is scheduled to play a doubleheader at home on Tuesday (Feb. 23) against Glenville State. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. On Friday, Feb. 26, Wesleyan will play host to West Virginia State inside the Rockefeller Center at 7 p.m.
