Preview: Bobcats Head South To Face West Virginia State

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan Women's Basketball will be at West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon to face the Yellow Jackets at 2 p.m. WVSU beat Wesleyan earlier in the season in Buckhannon 79-69. The Bobcats last beat WV State in March of 2021.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE YELLOW JACKETS
The Yellow Jackets enter (18-4) overall and (13-4) in MEC play. WV State has won their last two games, previously defeating Davis & Elkins 124-77 on the road on Wednesday. 124 points is their highest point total of the season and was the sixth time they've scored 100+ points.

WVSU ranks #1 in the country in Scoring Offense (90.7 PPG), Team Rebounds (52.4 RPG) and Offensive Rebounds (24.5 ORPG). The Yellow Jackets are 2nd in the country and the MEC behind Glenville State in Turnovers Forced (27.3 AVG/G) and 3rd in the country and 2nd in the MEC in Steals (15.5 SPG).

Destiny Fields is the leading scorer for WVSU at 13.9 PPG. Anysa Jordan (12.3 PPG) and Shelby Harmeyer (10.8 PPG) are the other Yellow Jackets averaging double-figures. Hannah Shriver leads the conference in assists, putting up almost five per game at 4.9 APG. Emyah Fortenberry leads WVSU and ranks 4th in the MEC in rebounding at 8.9 RPG. Caroline Scott and Zakorrah Russell are tied at the top of the league in steals, both getting 2.5 SPG.

Charles Marshall is in his seventh season as Head Coach of the Yellow Jackets. He has coached two All-MEC First Teamers, two MEC Freshman of the Year selections and one All-MEC Second Team honoree at WV State. Prior to WVSU, Marshall spent three years as the HC at Glenville State. In his first year at GSU, Marshall led the Lady Pioneers to a 29-4 overall record, MEC regular season and tournament championships, and a #1 seed in the Atlantic Region tournament. Marshall was also an assistant at GSU for two seasons before being elevated.

WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN BOBCATS
The Bobcats enter (4-16) overall and (3-14) in MEC play. Wesleyan lost at home on Wednesday night to Charleston 60-50.

Wesleyan's offense still sits last in the conference, averaging only 57.8 PPG. On the other end, the Bobcats rank 3rd in Scoring Defense, allowing just 67.5 PPG. WVWC has a 1.1 Rebounding Margin, placing them 5th in the conference.

Emma Witt's 20-point performance against Charleston raised her average up to 14.8 PPG (13th MEC). Daveona Hatchell grabbed 12 rebounds on Wednesday to put her at 6.8 RPG. Courtney Wilfong's 3.3 APG puts her tied for 8th in the league.
